Kinesio Taping

Kinesiology Taping for Sports Injuries

What is Kinesiology Tape?

The Kinesiology taping method is a physical therapy treatment that makes use of a special flexible tape that supports and stabilizes a bodily injury, while not limiting the range of body movement in the process. The customized, breathable tape can be applied to the skin in a wide variety of patterns that are specifically conducive to the needs of the patient’s health, age, lifestyle and location of the injury. The tautness of the tape allows for the lifting of the skin, which has been found to yield several health benefits. The lifting effect assists in healing by causing folds in the skin that improve circulation and reduce inflammation. Additionally, the tight but flexible pressure from the tape extends the benefits of manual chiropractic adjustments by manipulating soft tissues at the injury site. Kinesio® Tape is also latex-free, and, because of its ability to quickly alleviate pain, it can safely be worn by patients of all ages for days at a time.

Is Kinesio® Tape Used for Sports Injuries?

Wrapping injuries is a common physiotherapy practice for sports injuries. However, a sports wrap can often lead to increased pain and limited range of movement which, of course, affects sports performance. And, sometimes, any activity that involves the injured area must be avoided altogether. With Kinesio® taping, however, freedom of movement is not problematic. Kinesio tape is strong but extremely flexible and the customized stabilization not only helps to prevent further injury, it also allows for optimized performance during the healing process.

What Other Conditions Can Kinesio® Tape Be Used to Treat?

Although it is an excellent treatment option for sports injury healing and performance, the use of the Kinesio® Taping Method is definitely not just limited to sports-related conditions. As with any physical therapy treatments, a full evaluation should be conducted to determine the need for and most effective use of Kinesio® Tape. As the Kinesio method is used to treat issues with muscles, nerves and certain organs, it can help to provide relief for conditions such as migraines, low-back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, ankle sprains, whiplash, hamstring injuries, plantar fasciitis and many other muscle, nerve, joint, and tendon problems.
